The detection of hail impacts (as opposed to other types of ice or watery precipitation) is based on kinetic impact measurement. The characteristics of each hailstone detected (kinetic energy, equivalent diameter and impact time stamp) are both recorded and transmitted in real time. Software at the receiving end can make an immediate assessment of a hail event as it develops and can then be programmed to issue near real-time alerts based on the incoming data.
