KISTERS partners with Met Éireann to deliver Ireland’s next-generation environmental data platform.
12 March 2026
Press release: Aachen, Germany – 18 Feb, 2026:
The ‘COMPASS’ project will strengthen Ireland’s capacity to deliver trusted weather, water and climate services for decades to come thanks to KISTERS technology.

KISTERS, a global environmental data and IT company, is proud to announce its partnership with Met Éireann, Ireland’s National Meteorological Service, to design and deliver the information and communications technology (ICT) system, underpinning COMPASS (Cloud for Observations Management, Processing, Analysis and Storage System).
COMPASS is a new cloud-based platform commissioned by Met Éireann to modernise how environmental data is managed, processed and shared across Ireland. KISTERS has been selected to provide the full software suite using their WISKI system, alongside modern cloud technologies, forming the technological backbone of this national initiative. The platform will streamline how environmental observations are collected, processed, stored and made available to decision-makers across government, science and the public.
“This project represents a significant step forward in how Ireland manages the data that underpins essential public services,” said Klaus Kisters, CEO of KISTERS. “Met Éireann is leading the way in building a future-ready infrastructure for environmental science, and we are proud to support their vision by providing the tools and expertise needed to make it possible.”
COMPASS will serve as a central platform for managing earth-system observations across Ireland, from weather and water measurements to climate data. By deploying the WISKI suite in a modern cloud environment, the platform is designed to enable data to flow more efficiently from source to user, helping improve Ireland’s response to environmental challenges and supporting evidence-based decision-making in areas such as public safety, infrastructure planning and climate adaptation.
The COMPASS platform will leverage KISTERS’ expertise to unlock new capabilities for Met Éireann, including streaming observation data in near real time from source to user to improve the speed and quality of decision-making, applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to generate high-quality climatological datasets that support research and innovation, and incorporating emerging data sources such as IoT sensors, multi-hazard impact data and citizen science initiatives to expand the scope and richness of environmental observations.
These capabilities will strengthen Met Éireann’s services within Ireland while contributing to broader advances in meteorology, hydrology and climate science internationally.
With more than 60 years of experience supporting public agencies and utilities worldwide, KISTERS brings deep domain knowledge and proven technology to the COMPASS project. This partnership is a testament to KISTERS’ ongoing commitment to empowering organisations at the forefront of environmental science.
“Our purpose has always been to empower decision-makers with reliable, data-driven solutions,” added Klaus Kisters. “Projects like COMPASS remind us that our greatest impact is made when we help visionary organisations like Met Éireann reach new heights in serving their communities.”
