Case Study: Water, Food and Energy Nexus in Pakistan

The communities in Pakistan are becoming increasingly reliant on groundwater but the water table is lowering and the water quality deteriorates increasingly.

The quantity and the timing of the flows coming from the snow melt increased in variability, which is causing uncertainty in the food production sector. Also the large cotton industry heavily relies on local the local water resources. The high sediment transport in the major rivers cause a quick sediment build-up in the dams, which is limiting the hydro-electric use of the local water resources efficiently over time.

Water management tools are integrated with impact assessments for:

  • Impacts of climate change on energy and food security, particularly with changes to the amount of water available and the timing of river flows
  • Impacts of population growth on energy and food security

It was recognised that the current data management practises were diminishing the usefulness of their water management tools. The KISTERS Water Management Solution was chosen to digitally improve data and workflows. It was considered to be fully-featured and easy to deploy and maintain.

The KISTERS solution has been installed and configured to reproduce the functionality of existing systems at federal and provincial agencies, including Ministry of Water & Power, Indus River System Authority, Water And Power Development Authority, Sindh Irrigation Department, Punjab Irrigation Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigation Department.
