Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) decides for KISTERS Water Solution

The Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) hosted by the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) in Koblenz decides to replace its existing data management system with the KISTERS Water Solution.

The GRDC is operating under the auspices of the WMO for almost 30 years. It is supporting worldwide research programmes and projects related to water resources and climate change with quality assured river discharge data from more than 9000 stations in 160 countries. More than 2500 data requests from universities and research organisations based in 82 countries have been served with GRDC data. Last year the GRDC provided more than 300,000 hydrological time series of mean daily and mean monthly discharges. In addition GRDC is providing derived statistical hydrological products like HQ, MQ, LQ to requestors from science and industry.

To process all requests without delay, highly efficient software is required.

Upkeep and operation of the in-house developed GRDC software can no longer be maintained. To ensure smooth operation in future, GRDC has decided for the KISTERS Water Solution. The software meets the requirements of a global data centre and provides GRDC with the potential to manage additional variables and to access web services functionality. The comprehensive user administration of the KISTERS Water Solution enables the GRDC to use the system together with the Global Water Quality Database GEMStat, which is hosted by the BfG, too. The joint use of the system is creating synergies, which are beneficial for data centres.

Updating GRDC time series and addition of new stations will become easier by common data formats, as many hydrological services are using the KISTERS Water Solution. For the future, data transfer by web services is envisaged.
