Alexander von Humboldt. Curare. On their Orinoco expedition, in May 1800 Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland witnessed the production of the dart poison curare near Esmeralda. Humboldt not only kept detailed records of his observations but also drew direct scientific conclusions from them, tested them on himself and took samples for further chemical tests. Humboldt thus not only supplied the first verifiable description of his own observations but also launched systematic scientific research into curare and how it could be used in medicine. |
Precise information - safe transport. The handling of dangerous goods does involve particular risks for man and environment and therefore, it requires a high degree of sense of responsibility. To keep the risks to a minimum, laws were enacted for the transport of dangerous goods. In order to prevent damages and disasters, the multitude of regulations regarding transport and storage of dangerous goods are to be observed. Such laws are permanently adapted to actual requirements or amendments are made. Enterprises, service providers and enforcement agencies concerned have a lot to do nowadays when fulfilling the statutory provisions: checking whether the regulations are relevant for the special case, considering the latest state and regarding further trainings. Moreover, the complexity of these laws makes it difficult to comply with them.
