Optimum Software Receipe for Takasago Europe GmbH

SoCaL

Chemical Product Safety

In early 2006, the German branch of Takasago Europe GmbH took a trendsetting decision in favour of ERP-integrated danger management. The enterprise resource planning system used hitherto was to be replaced by a standard SAP solution. Right from the start, the success of the project was due among others to danger management, which has come under increasing pressure to optimise costs while complying with the REACH and GHS requirements.

The decision in favour of a uniform corporate software package was based on experience gained with a complex structure of insular solutions which had led to extensive workload over the years for adaptations and extensions. The decision was quickly made in favour of a fixed price solution: the SAP EASY Pack by Gambit GmbH in combination with SoCaL danger management by KISTERS. The globally unique EASY Pack procedure by Gambit made the project plannable and manageable in terms of costs and workload. SoCaL by KISTERS guaranteed 100% transfer of the database consisting of 40,000 recipes and product descriptions - for Takasago Europe this was an investment value which made data transfer one of the critical factors in the success of the entire introduction project.

The solution

The "System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, Preparations and Products", a.k.a. SoCaL, supports all necessary business processes for fulfilling statutory and specific stipulations with regard to dangerous goods/substances, and calculates the classification and labelling of semi- and finished products according to the ingredients they contain. The calculation is based on the ingredient data relating to dangerous substances. The ingredients are broken down to the basic materials (Dangerous Substances List Annex 1 Dangerous Substances Ordinance) which are continuously deposited in the currently valid version of the program. Following the calculation process, all required data are directly available in SAP where they can be accessed and used for various outputs following corresponding evaluations.

SoCaL was launched in 2006 and is in use today in a good dozen companies.

The benefit

At Takasago GmbH, SoCaL proceeds with classification and labelling of 40,000 recipes according to the specific jurisdiction, ensuring that these are reviewed and legally compliant; today already this also includes classification results as per GHS. In addition, the required documents, safety data sheets, labels, transport papers etc. are produced in up to 30 European and Asian languages simply by pressing a button. In this way, SoCaL keeps the costs for fulfilling the statutory requirements on a manageable level.
Technically rated for intranet and internet use, SoCaL can be used directly in all system environments without additional basic software and at many workplaces.
