Water Resources Management

Key Features

Our solution

The introduction of the European Water Framework Directives (EU-WFD) requires new and integrated software solutions in water resources management. Nationally and internationally the main focus will lay particularly on river basin management with its main components. These are monitoring programs, river basin management plans and public information and consultations.

The modular software tool for river basin management offers a scalable solution, which is suitable to meet the requirements of the EU-WFD.

The WISKI data model builds the groundwork for managing and processing all relevant data relating to water resources management (e.g. hydrology, meteorology, groundwater, water quality etc.). Moreover scale dependent data relating to points (e.g. discharge measurements), lines (e.g. water quality) and areas (e.g. areal precipitation) as well as every kind of modelling results and information on hydraulic structures can be stored in this central database. It also includes an optional management of geodata.

Data acquisition is available through approved monitoring- and telemetry components offered by Kisters. They provide easy and automated data acquisition and safe and comfortable data transfer into the central data base.

The hydrologic workbench WISKI is the central unit for managing basic water resources information (data), accessing time series, calculating aggregated and long term values, data analysis and process automation. WISKI consists of several independent modules (SKED, WCS, DIGIT, MAP etc.), which can be merged to a tool with variable functional range depending on the customers needs.

In addition to the acquisition and management of measured data, models (precipitation - runoff models, groundwater models, reservoir operating models) represent an important instrument in water resources planning. Within the software solution for river basin management an integrated model interface is available. Therein you can choose between a simple connection through a defined data exchange interface or a direct integration of the model into the hydrologic workbench WISKI. Hence, an improved workflow within the tasks in river basin management could be achieved.

The interface to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) represents a further possibility for presentation and analysis of water resources information. Here we offer scalable solutions based on different GIS products (Map Objects, ArcView 3.x, ArcGIS).

The connection to geographical information systems provides an extended option for data display and evaluation. Here KISTERS can offer you the direct integration of GIS components into the WISKI hydrological workbench to ensure the smooth transfer of data. Rapid spatial orientation in the area of investigation as well as spatial analysis with increasingly up-to-date data is possible.

The interface to ArcView 3.x and ArcGis provides a borader way of managing and presenting data as well as numerous additional functions to analyse water resources data against the background of geographical information. The customer has the possibility to use extensions for specific hydrological analysis (e.g. areal precipitation, groundwater contours) and may use a more comprehensive database with data from adjacent areas of interest to produce printouts such as water quality maps.

Within the GIS all geographic objects and information will be managed and stored. It ranges from local file based storage to a modern central geodatabase.

Public information and consultation represents a fundamental part of the EU-WFD. That means, that all member states shall encourage the active involvement of all interested parties. It requires a comprehensive means of information management in order to provide all necessary information regarding river basin management.

The web based information centre WISKI-Web, offers direct access to selected data via standard internet browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape. WISKI-Web is easily configurable in order to suit different requirements like detailed intranet solutions for information management within organisations or light internet solutions for the general public. The first step towards the data can be made via a sensitive geographic map with GIS functions (zoom, pan, select, etc.) or directly via a questionnaire. At any rate WISKI-Web provides an intuitive user interface and ensures an easy and always up to date way to the desired information.
